What are the symptoms and treatments of prostatitis?

Before talking about prostatitis symptoms and treatments, we should know how many types of prostatitis there are and what they are. There are main 3 types of prostatitis: acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis and chronic non-bacterial prostatitis. In each type of prostatitis, patients present with different symptoms. Different treatment options are provided for patients with different prostatitis.

1.Acute bacterial prostatitis

Acute bacterial prostatitis usually relates to bacterial infection in the prostate gland in which immediate treatment is necessary. It is not difficult to diagnose because its symptoms often involve infection. Causative organisms such as gram-negative, coliform bacteria may be found in blood or urine. Patients with acute bacterial prostatitis often have fever, pain in the lower back and urinary problems like frequent, urgent or painful urination. Symptoms may sudden appear. The most common treatment for acute bacterial prostatitis is antibiotics. 14 to 21 days antibiotic treatment is needed to eliminate inflammations.

2.Chronic bacterial prostatitis

Chronic bacterial prostatitis is more common to see in older men. It involves less severe infection than acute bacterial prostatitis. Its symptoms often come and go, lingering for a few weeks. One of the causes is the previous urinary tract infection or acute bacterial prostatitis, so patients may present with some similar symptoms, including urgent needs to pee, painful urination, pain after ejaculation, pain in the lower back, testes or penis, blood in semen and urinary blockage. Since it is a bacterial-type of prostatitis, antibiotics like TMP-SMX and nitrofurantoin are often recommended. However, long-term use of antibiotics will harm body parts like kidney. Some herbal medicines like Nanke Pill with anti-inflammatory effects can also be used in curing chronic bacterial prostatitis.

3.Chronic non-bacterial prostatitis

Chronic non-bacterial prostatitis (also called chronic pelvic pain syndrome) is reported to account for more than 95% men with prostatitis. Patients with this type of disease often face various degrees of pain in body parts, discomfort, and urinary problems. Main symptoms include difficulty in urination, frequent or urgent needs of urination, sensation of pain or burning with urination, pain with bowel movement, pain in lower back, testicles, penis or bladder area, post-ejaculatory pain and erectile difficulties. To improve symptoms of chronic non-bacterial prostatitis, various therapies are available. The main therapies includes medication such as antimicrobials, alpha-blockers, anti-inflammatories and herbal medicines, invasive procedures such as bladder neck surgery and other supportive therapy such as warm baths, acupuncture, relaxation exercises and massage therapy.

Knowing what the symptoms and treatments of each type of prostatitis are is helpful for patients to decide a proper treatment option for their own condition. Among the various treatment options, herbal-based therapy which is free of side effects is strongly recommended.
