What causes prostatitis?

Prostatitis means the inflammation of the tissue inside the prostate. It usually affects men at the age of 30-50 years, but it can occur in men of all ages. Signs or Syndromes include fever with chills, urinary obstruction, painful or difficult urination, pain in the lower back, painful ejaculation and so on. There are various types of prostatitis, including acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, chronic nonbacterial prostatitis and asymptomatic prostatitis. As for what causes prostatitis, they have not been completely understood yet. There are two main theories about the causes of prostatitis, western medicine theory and traditional Chinese medicine theory.

Western medicine theory

In the western medicine theory, there are mainly three types of causes, including bacterial infection, disordered immune response, and physical and muscular injury. Bacterial prostatitis are caused by bacterial infections. In most of the cases, gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus mirabilis is involved. Other cases of bacterial prostatitis are caused by sexually transmitted diseases such as Neisseria Gonorrhea, chlamydia or HIV. Another thought that prostatitis is the result of mis-functioning of men’s immune system also exists. Physical, muscular or neurological injuries may be one cause of prostatitis. For example, a disordered state of tension in your pelvic floor can cause prostatitis. Complications from past surgeries may result in chronic prostatitis. Other non-bacterial situations like prostate stones, a urethral stricture, or even a food allergy can be one possible cause of prostatitis.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory

Regarding the question: what causes prostatitis, the traditional Chinese medicine theory presents a totally different answer from the western theory. In the traditional Chinese medicine theory, the human body is a system in dynamic balance. Qi, the body’s vital energy, flows through channels inside the body. If the Qi is blocked, the balance is broken, thus causing certain disease. Jueyin Liver Channel of Foot and Shaoyin Kidney Chanel of Foot are two main meridian channels running through prostate. The blockage of Qi and blood in these two channels can lead to prostatitis. In the traditional Chinese medicine theory, dampness-heat of scrotum is the root cause of prostatitis. Heat and dampness invades the body and brings stagnation to the Qi and blood circulation system. Weakness in kidney also contributes to prostatitis. To cure prostatitis from the root and strengthen body resistance, we need to clear heat and promoting diuresis and activate blood and remove stasis.
Besides these theories, our mood, lifestyle and eating habit can influence the internal body balance. A man who eats two much junk food, does not eat vegetables and fruit, has bad habit like smoking or drinking alcohol and does not like doing exercise is prone to be invaded by dampness-heat, thus suffering from prostatitis. No matter what causes your prostatitis, have a healthy lifestyle is good to all situations.
