The prostate gland has been playing an important role in men’s reproductive system. The size of the prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. It locates below the urinary bladder and surrounds the urinary passage. The main function of the prostate is secretion of fluid that constitutes 30% of semen. Prostatitis is a condition in which inflammation exists in men’s prostate gland. There are various types of prostatitis, bacterial, non-bacterial, acute or chronic. Each type has its own causes and symptoms of prostate. Acute prostatitis and chronic bacterial prostatitis often involve bacterial infection. They are not very common to see and antibiotics are often adopted to treat these diseases. Chronic non-bacterial prostatitis which is also called chronic pelvic pain syndrome accounts for more than 95% of patients with prostatitis. It is characterized by pelvic pain and unitary problems and can be treated by alpha blockers, herbal medicine and physical therapy, surgery and so on. For some patients, there are no symptoms at all. This type is called asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in older men in which the prostate gland enlarges. Patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia often face urinary problems like difficult or frequent urination. As the prostate grows large, it presses against the urinary passage and blocks the flow of urine, leading to various urinary problems. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is cancerous and can be treated with medication, a minimally invasive procedure and surgery for extreme case. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancer among older men. Most of the prostate cancer happen in men more than 50 years old. The cancer cell of prostate often grow slowly and may spread from the prostate to other parts of the body. Usually, there is no clear signs and symptoms of prostate cancer. Its main risk factors include obesity, family history and age. Several tests can help identify prostate cancer. Therefore, for older man, regular cancer screening for prostate is recommended. Depending on each men’s own condition, several treatment options including prostatectomy, radiation therapy, radioactive seed implants, hormone therapy, chemotherapy and watchful waiting are available.
